The DC Comics Time Capsule: March 1974

It’s time to tear open a new capsule and head back to March of 1974, a month that saw Robert Redford & Mia Farrow on the big screen, James Taylor & Carly Simon topping the charts, Columbo and Johnny Cash matching wits,  and George Foreman and Ken Norton duking it out in Venezuela… while on the spinner racks, Wonder Woman began a new era and Superman battled Captain Marvel, (or at least a reasonable facsimile)!
 
 
News of the Month:
 
1st - Watergate grand jury indicts 7 presidential aides
 
2nd - 16th Grammy Awards: Roberta Flack Best Record - "Killing Me Softly", Stevie Wonder Best Album - "Innervisions"
 
4th - Harold Wilson replaces resigning Edward Heath as British prime minister
 
8th – Last original episode of The Brady Bunch airs
 
11th - Imperial Japanese Army second lieutenant Hiroo Onoda formally surrenders after having continued to carry out his orders in World War II to fight in the Philippines for 29 years, the last Japanese soldier to surrender
 
19th - U.S. Senator James L. Buckley became the first conservative Republican in Congress to call for the resignation of U.S. President Richard Nixon
 
20th - In London, an attempt is made to kidnap Princess Anne, daughter of Queen Elizabeth II, Ian Ball, later found by a court to be insane, drives his Ford Escort into the path of an automobile bringing Anne and her husband Mark Phillips back to Buckingham Palace after a charity event. Ball begins firing a pistol and shoots Anne's bodyguard Jim Beaton; chauffeur Alex Callender; and tabloid reporter Brian McConnell and police constable Michael Hills. A passing pedestrian, former boxer Ron Russell, punches Ball and leads Anne to safety.
 
23rd - "The Wall of Sound", the largest concert sound system up to that time, makes its debut at the Grateful Dead's concert at the Cow Palace, near San Francisco.  Designed by the band's sound engineer, Owsley Stanley, the Wall of Sound is composed of 604 total speakers with a combined 26,400 watts of power.
 
29th - Chinese farmers discover the Terracotta Army near Xi'an, 8,000 clay warrior statues buried to guard the tomb of China's 1st emperor, Qin Shi Huang

Sports Moment of the Month: After George Foreman TKOs Ken Norton in 2nd round in defense of his heavyweight boxing title in Caracas, Venezuela, Muhammad Ali provides post-fight commentary and previews his own upcoming fight with Foreman (March 26, 1974)
