Bonus DC Time Capsule: July 1958

For our bonus time capsule installment, let’s journey back 66 years to July of 1958, where we’ll encounter “Splish Splash”, “King Creole”, and the beginnings of NASA while Mort Weisinger introduced his young readers to Elastic Lad and Red Kryptonite!
 
 
News of the Month:
 
2nd - The world's largest hotel at the time, the 1,065-room Stardust Resort and Casino, opens in Las Vegas
 
3rd - "Andy Williams Show" premieres on ABC
 
5th - Wimbledon Women's Tennis: American Althea Gibson beats Angela Mortimer of England 8-6, 6-2 to successfully defend her title
 
12th - Gene De Paul and Johnny Mercer's musical "Li'l Abner", adapted from Al Capp's hillbilly comic strip, closes at St James Theater, NYC, after 693 performances and 2 Tony Award wins
 
12th - The Quarrymen, a group of Liverpool musicians (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, with drummer Colin Hanton and keyboardist John Lowe), are paid 17 shillings and 6 pence to make their first professional recording, a 78 rpm disc of their performance of "In Spite of All the Danger" (an original song by McCartney and Harrison) and a cover version of Buddy Holly's "That'll Be the Day".
 
15th - President Eisenhower sends US troops to Lebanon; Operation Blue Bat is the first application of the "Eisenhower Doctrine" to use the U.S. military to protect any regime considered to be threatened by Communism
 
29th - President Eisenhower signs into law National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958
