So I saw some recent information online about how the final edits are being completed on the last (non-Modern era Epic) Star Wars volume - 54 volumes I believe? 10 plus years. Every single issue collected.
I’m not a prior reader of the Star Wars stuff, but I legitimately think that this is a major accomplishment for the line itself. When it started, I believe in 2013, I thought about how ten or so years later they could potentially hit this exact point with a series/character. For a comic book line that has a stated purpose of completing full runs, Marvel is doing what they said they would do. Kudos to them.
Does anyone else find it a bit of a bummer, though, that we got a complete run of 50 something Star Wars volumes over that time period instead of 25-30 volumes of a complete run of Spidey, or Cap, or Thor, or FF, or Avengers, or Hulk? I understand that it’s not an apples to apples comparison, in that SW was publishing different “eras” of different series/characters. I also understand that Marvel had less competing reprint formats for these series as well. But to think that a full run of the Star Wars stuff will get completed ahead of any single line of the legacy characters, even though it’s nearly double the amount of volumes to get there, just doesn’t seem right to me. Marvel’s history was built on these characters, not the Dark Horse SW stuff, and for a line that has the stated intention of the Epics, not getting there first with one of the legacy characters seems like a huge miss to me.
For me, I hope the end of the legacy Star Wars line means we get more traction toward completing the lines I mentioned above within the next couple of years. There should be more spots for more of these books, and I hope Marvel takes advantage.
Thoughts? Outside of the comments to just exercise patience, please. I understand that none of this is all that big a deal at the end of the day. But Marvel DID complete a run in this timeframe, it’s just not the right one in my opinion. It’s more about choices than patience for me given the circumstances. In any event, I would love to hear from others about their thoughts on this.
